What a Nutrition Company Gains by Buying a Personalisation Platform

A reader put a question to me last month that I had not been asked before: “what does a nutrition company actually gain by buying a personalisation platform? Surely it already knows how to make supplements.”

It is a sharper question than it first looks, and I think the answer explains why I keep coming back to this subject. When Herbalife acquired Bioniq’s core personalised nutrition business — announced on 26 March 2026, completed on 30 April — what changed hands was not a recipe. It was a method for working out which recipe suits which person. Those are two genuinely different skills, and the gap between them is where all the interesting bits sit.

Making a product and matching a product are not the same job

A company that has spent decades making shakes, teas and bars is good at a particular set of things: sourcing, formulating, quality control, getting a consistent product into a box and onto a shelf in dozens of countries. That is manufacturing expertise, and it is hard-won.

None of it, though, tells you what you specifically should be taking. A tub on a shelf has to suit the widest possible group, so it is aimed at the middle of the room by design. Matching is a separate discipline: you need a way to ask the right questions, a set of formulas broad enough to mean something, and the logistics to send a different box to the person next door. That is the capability Bioniq GO was built around, in London, back in 2019.

So what does the platform actually consist of?

Strip away the word “platform” and it is three concrete things working together:

  • A way in that people will actually complete. A free Wellness Assessment, answered online, with no blood test, no appointment and no needles. If the front door is difficult, nothing behind it matters.
  • Enough formulas for the answers to count. Your responses point to one of 40 formulas rather than to a single universal product. Forty is not infinite, but it is a long way from one.
  • A format that survives daily life. One sachet of premium Swiss granules a day, holding up to 23 science-backed nutrients, vegan-friendly, with no pills to count out. A clever match is worth very little if the routine collapses by week three.

Why that is worth more than simply adding another product

This is the part I find genuinely interesting from a shopkeeper’s point of view. Adding a new tub to a range gives you one more thing to sell. Adding a matching system changes how the whole range can be approached: instead of a customer guessing which of several similar-sounding products fits their week, there is a process that asks first and answers afterwards.

It also builds in something a static product cannot manage — the ability to change. Lives shift, seasons shift, goals shift. A questionnaire you can retake means the formula can follow you, which I have written about separately in how your formula changes when your answers change. A tub, by contrast, is the same tub in January as it is in July.

What it means for you, in practice

Honestly? On your own shelf, less than people expect — and I say that as a good thing. Bioniq carries on as its own brand, with its own assessment and its own shop, and nothing of yours has been renamed or quietly replaced. What the move signals is direction: personalisation treated as a serious part of nutrition rather than as a marketing word.

If you want to see what the matching does with your answers, the sensible move is the obvious one: take the free Wellness Assessment and read what comes back. It takes less time than the weekly shop, and you are under no obligation at the end of it.

Alongside it, keep the food-shaped things doing the food-shaped work — shakes, bars, teas, the targeted nutrition range. The two occupy different slots in a day, and the cupboard runs better when you treat them that way. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

The short version

A nutrition company that buys a personalisation platform is not buying ingredients. It is buying the questions, the logic that turns answers into a formula, and the format that makes a daily habit realistic. That is the hard part, and it is the part you end up feeling.
