Storing Your Sachets: Heat, Light and Shelf Life

Storing Your Sachets: Heat, Light and Shelf Life

Here is a myth I hear surprisingly often: “it’s sealed, so it doesn’t matter where I keep it.”

The seal is doing a great deal of work, and it is doing it well — but a sachet is not a vault. Heat, damp and strong light are the three things a supplement would rather be kept away from, and the ordinary British home offers all three in places people rarely think twice about. The good news is that getting this right takes about thirty seconds and no special equipment.

Myth one: the bathroom cabinet is a sensible home

It is the most common storage spot in the country and quite possibly the worst. A bathroom goes from cold to steamy and back again several times a day, and that swing in warmth and humidity is precisely the environment you are trying to avoid. Boxes soften, cardboard goes faintly damp, and anything that ends up open near a running shower has a harder time of it than it needs to.

If your dose is genuinely attached to brushing your teeth, I would not fight the habit — habits are hard-won. I would just move the box to the shelf outside the bathroom door, or to a bedside drawer, so the routine survives and the sachets do not sit in steam all week.

Myth two: the fridge must be better

It usually is not. Unless the pack tells you to refrigerate, a fridge introduces condensation every time the box comes out into a warm kitchen, and moisture is the thing you were trying to dodge in the first place. Cool and dry beats cold and damp.

What you actually want is dull and boring: room temperature, out of direct sun, away from anything that generates heat. The label is the authority here, and if you want a broader sense of how to read one properly, I have written about what the numbers on a supplement label really mean — storage instructions sit in the same small print people tend to skim.

The three culprits, in order of how often they catch people out

  • Heat. The windowsill above a radiator, the shelf directly over the hob, the glovebox of a car in July. Cars are the sneaky one — a box left in a footwell after the weekly shop can get considerably warmer than the day outside.
  • Light. Direct sunlight on a kitchen counter, day after day, is more of a factor than a brightly lit room. Cupboard door shut, job done.
  • Damp. Steam from a kettle, an unventilated bathroom, a cupboard backing onto a boiler. Granules in particular prefer to stay dry until the moment you use them.

Why the sachet format helps here

Single-dose packaging quietly solves a problem that tubs and bottles create. With a large canister, every scoop means opening the whole supply to the air in your kitchen; with Bioniq GO, only the dose you are about to take is ever exposed, and the rest of the box stays sealed behind it. One sachet of premium Swiss granules a day, up to 23 science-backed nutrients in it, and nothing sitting half-open for a fortnight.

It also makes travelling straightforward. A few sachets slipped into a wash bag or a laptop sleeve travel far better than a bottle of loose tablets, which is worth knowing if your week involves hotels or a lot of train journeys. Keep them out of the sun and away from a hot car, and they will be fine.

Shelf life, honestly

Check the date on the box. That is genuinely the whole of it — not the date you opened it, not a rule of thumb someone passed on, the date printed on the pack, stored as the pack instructs. Good storage helps a product last as intended; it does not extend a date that has already passed, and I would not encourage anyone to push past one.

One practical note: if you are on a monthly rhythm, you are unlikely to ever be near a date at all, because a box is finished long before it could become a question. The people who find old stock at the back of a cupboard are usually the ones who bought a lot at once, or who stopped for a while and forgot they had it. If that sounds familiar, my thoughts on what to do when you miss a day may be more useful than anything about storage.

A thirty-second checklist

  • Out of the bathroom, unless the bathroom is genuinely dry and stable.
  • Cupboard or drawer rather than an open counter in the sun.
  • Not above the hob, not on a radiator shelf, not left in the car.
  • Keep the box — it is the shade, and it is where the date is printed.
  • Take a photo of the storage line on the pack if you are prone to throwing outer boxes away.

None of this is fussy. It is the same common sense you already apply to olive oil and coffee, and it takes one decision, once, when a new box arrives. If you want to see how the rest of your cupboard fits together alongside a daily personalised dose, our targeted nutrition range is a sensible place to browse.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
