Nutrition for People Who Train Before Work

The five-forty-five alarm is its own kind of commitment. Whatever gets done before work — a run along wet pavements, a class, forty minutes in a garage gym — has to fit in the gap between waking up and having to look like a functioning adult, and that gap does not stretch. Almost every question I get from early trainers is really a question about that gap.

So instead of writing a training guide, which is not my job, I have gathered the four questions customers genuinely ask me about eating and supplementing around an early session, and answered them the way I would if you were standing in front of me. They are in the order people usually ask them.

“Do I have to eat before a six o’clock session?”

Honestly, it depends on what you are doing and how your stomach behaves at that hour, and anyone who gives you a universal rule is selling something. Plenty of people manage a steady run on nothing but water. Plenty of others go lightheaded twenty minutes in and spend the rest of the morning regretting it.

What I would say is this: the decision is easier to make once you stop treating the session as the whole question. The session is forty minutes. The morning is five hours. If skipping breakfast before training means you also skip it after — because the shower ran long and the train was early — then the problem was never the pre-workout snack. It was the breakfast that never happened.

“When does the supplement go in — before or after?”

This is where I try to lower the stakes a bit. A daily supplement is not a pre-workout and it is not a recovery drink. It is the background layer of your nutrition, and background layers do not need to be timed to the minute. What they need is to actually happen, every day, including the days the alarm wins.

Which is why, for people who train early, I suggest picking the moment in the morning that is least negotiable and attaching the supplement to that. Not the training, which moves. Not breakfast, which sometimes evaporates. Something fixed:

  • the kettle going on, before anything else happens
  • the first glass of water after you get back through the door
  • the moment you sit down at your desk or open the laptop

One dose, one anchor, done before eight. There is more on why that structure survives a busy week in my piece on why one dose a day is easier to keep up than four, but the short version is that a routine with one moving part beats a routine with four.

“Do I need something around training as well?”

Often, yes, and it is worth keeping the two categories separate in your head rather than hoping one product does both jobs. Things built for around a session — hydration, protein, something to eat when you have twenty minutes and a commute — sit in our Energy and Fitness range, and they answer a training question. A daily personalised supplement answers a different one: what your everyday nutrition looks like across the whole week, not just the hour you were sweating.

Confusing the two is the most common mix-up I see. People expect a daily formula to feel like a scoop of something before a session, do not feel it, and conclude it is not working. It was never built to do that.

“Does training before work actually change what I need?”

It changes the shape of your week, certainly. Early starts, meals eaten at odd hours, a body doing more than the average body on a Tuesday morning — that is a long way from the middle of the room that a standard multivitamin was designed around. The standard tablet cannot know any of it, because nobody ever asked.

That is the gap Bioniq GO is built to close. You take the free Wellness Assessment online first — no blood test, no appointment, no needles — and your answers, including how active your week really is, point towards one of 40 formulas rather than towards one universal product. What arrives is premium Swiss granules with up to 23 science-backed nutrients in a single daily dose, vegan-friendly, and no pills to count out at dawn. The nutrients can support normal energy-yielding metabolism as part of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle, alongside goals such as normal skin, hair and nails. Quiet background work, in other words, which is exactly what you want from the one part of the morning that should never need a decision.

Bioniq was founded in London in 2019, and its personalised nutrition business is now part of Herbalife — which is how it comes to be sitting alongside the rest of what I stock.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

If your training happens before the working day and you have never checked whether your daily nutrition is keeping up with it, the assessment takes a few minutes and costs nothing: build your personalised formula with Bioniq GO and see what your own answers point to.
